A Grazing Week…

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Ok, so you will have noticed, by now, that I haven’t posted any meal tracking or other weight loss updates.  Last  Saturday I "couldn’t" stop eating.  That has turned into a whole week (5 days) of "grazing".  I seem to be continually hungry, or "need" something to eat.

I’m sure it is more psychological than anything, but it’s frustrating.  From Oct 21 - 27 I went from 287 pounds down to 284.4.  I lost almost three pounds.  Then on Saturday I gained it all back plus one pound.  I was at 288.  I guess that hurt me more than I thought as I haven’t done anything but eat, and NOT eat well.

So, here I am confessing it all.  I asked friends and relatives to pray and encourage. I promised I would post meals, eating, progress, etc., but I haven’t.  Tomorrow (Thursday) I start anew.  That reminds me of a poem I wrote in college"

A sunset
    Is a poem
        Written anew
Each day.

God bless all and take care.  See you tomorrow.

Not Good Eating Today - Friday

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Breakfast:

  • 2 glazed donuts
  • 1 20oz Med Dr. Pepper.

Snack:

  • 18 Salt and Vinegar Chips

Lunch:

  • Hamburger and Fries from the deli
  • 16 oz Mug Rootbeer

So, in using the Hacker’s Diet, I’m finding that I have cut my caloric intake by about 23 calories.  It’s less I need.  The Hacker’s Diet suggests that you cut it by 500 calories a day on a 2200 daily caloric intake so you would actually be ingesting only 1700 calories.  It looks like I need to cut waay back.

I’m not really calorie counting yet.  I’ve just been going by if I am hungry or not.  This is a good way to get started, but I’m not getting the results I want.  So, now I get to plan healthier meals and eat less calories.

EDIT: It looks like I am actually eating about 200 less calories now that I go back and look at the log.  Good, but I know I can still do better.  Exercise starts next week.

Dinner: (Chinese Food)

  • Sizzling Steak Ha Cube (steak, shrimp, onions, garlic, sauce)
  • Fried rice
  • 1 egg roll
  • 1 cup wor won ton soup (wonton, slice of port, veggies, and really good broth today)
  • Pan fried noodles
  • 3 large glasses of iced tea

Again I was really hungry when we ordered.  I need to remember to drink one full glass of water before actually ordering.  This trick does work for me.

So tomorrow is a leadership meeting at Church.  I’ll post my eating choices at the brunch and lunch later tomorrow afternoon.

October Weight Loss ImageSo here is a picture of the graph that is generated on The Hacker’s Diet tracking system.

The first point on the red line was my first weigh in at 287 pounds.  The green lines represent my weight loss.  As you can see I’m going down.  It’s not as fast as this graph would indicate, but I’m progressing.

Meal Tracking - Thursday

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Breakfast:

  • None

I didn’t get up early enough and wasn’t really hungry.

Lunch:

  • Left-over Riblets from Applebees.  Maybe five sections.  Not sure how much they weighed though
  • One bottle of Grape Powerade (32 oz)

Again I don’t feel stuffed.  I feel satisfied at the moment probably because of the sugar in the BBQ sauce.  And it was flavorful

Dinner:

  • Fried Fish
  • Peas
  • 3 Grands Biscuits
  • 2 large glasses of Kool-Aid

I finally was able to cook dinner again.  I really do enjoy cooking, but with being one and a half hours away from home every day it is sometimes hard to have dinner ready at a reasonable hour.  I ate too much fish.  I snacked on the smaller pieces after I cooked them all and was waiting on the biscuits.

No snack or midnight thirsts

Breakfast

  • 2 glazed donuts
  • 20 oz Dr. Pepper

Again, woke up late so I begged the "quick" breakfast.  I need to make some quick and easy breakfast items I can just nuke and run with

Lunch:

  • 4 slices of large Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza (no cheese)
  • can of Squirt soda

I felt good after lunch. I didn’t feel stuffed at all.

Dinner:

  • French Dip Sandwich, 1/2 cup (about) of Au Jus
  • mixed fruit (1 cup about) side dish

I felt good about having fruit instead of fries.

Snack:

  • 2 Large glasses of Orange Juice
  • 1 "to go" bottle of Sunny Delight Fruit Punch

I was really thirsty last night and didn’t want water.  Probably not the best thing.

Breakfast:

  • Bowl of Rice Crispies
  • Large glass of Orange Juice

Lunch:

  • Hamburger and Fries from Sonny’s
  • 20 oz Dr. Pepper

I feel really full after eating all this.  I should have ate half the burger, and half of the fries.  I’ll remember for next time.

Snack:

  • Low-Carb Peanut Butter Cookie.  NOTE: My coworker is on the low-carb plan, and tries foods out on me :)

Dinner:

  • 4 slices from a large Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza (no cheese)
  • 2 large glasses of OJ

I was really hungry when I got home again.  I’ll find some healthy snacks this weekend

Meal Tracking - A Start to Weight Loss

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Well, I’m starting to get serious about weight loss.  I currently weigh about 287 lbs.  An inspiration to this new burst of motivation is a new coworker.  He has lost about 30 pounds in 5 months using the low-carb method.  My wife and I had tried the Atkins Diet, but we found it both too expensive for our budget and that we craved carbs.

So, we have gone on and off Weight Watchers, which is a good plan by the way, and I just don’t want to spend the money on myself to join again.  I know I can lose weight.  I "know" everything I need to do.  So, I’m going to follow "The Hacker’s Diet" by John Walker and use by website to track various parts of my weight loss.

Part of losing weight is knowing what you eat.  I always know what I eat, and that is way too much. As a result, I am now starting to reduce the amount I eat by either purchasing prepackaged and healthy food, or by packing and cooking myself smaller portions of food.  So I will post what I eat every day.  Even if I mess up I will post it.  Also, I will be posting my weight loss progress on the "Hacker’s Diet" site (link forthcoming).  Okay, let’s get started

What I Ate Today

Breakfast:

  • 2 glazed donuts
  • 20oz regular Dr. Pepper

Lunch:

  • Rare Roast beef sandwich with lettuce and tomato on white bread, with a little mustard
  • A can of diet Dr. Pepper

Snack:

  • 1 Mangolimon piece of candy (small Jolly Rancher candy)

Dinner:

  • T-Bone steak
  • About 2 cups of tater tots
  • 2 large glasses of Orange Juice

Well, there is a start.  We’ll see how this progresses.

EDIT: So last I came home a bit hungry.  That was to be expected after minimizing my portions so much.  For dinner, I did end up eating too much.  I was a bit uncomfortable.  But I’m tracking my meals.

So as you see, I am starting post a bit more.  I was looking for a tool that would allow quick posting to my site.  I tried w.bloggar, but I couldn’t get past the source code view when links or formatting are done to the test.  So, I kept looking for a tool, and then remembered the bookmarklet.  After a bit of searching I found it It is called  Press It and is found at the bottom of your "Write Post" page.

Enjoy.

AT&T - “We can turn you off, if you bad mouth us.”

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Apparently, AT&T has changed its Terms of Service and can terminate or suspend your account if you say bad things about them.  From the Boing Boing post that brought this to my attention:

AT&T has brought down new Terms of Service for its network customers. From now on, AT&T can terminate your connection for conduct that "tends to damage the name or reputation of AT&T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries." So AT&T customers aren’t allowed to write/podcast/vlog critical things about AT&T, its billing-practices, or its cooperation with illegal NSA wiretapping, on pain of having their connections disconnected.

Here is a link to AT&T’s new Terms of Service.  The section in question is 5.1(c).  Read it for yourself.

Recently, I had been contemplating moving from Clearwire’s service to DSL or Cable to get more consistent speeds.  However, I don’t think I will be making that move now.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, this is something that AT&T is allowed to do.  We need to vote with our dollars if you don’t like these terms of service.
